It’s not looking too good for the EPA. (In this political climate, it never does.)

First, EPA knew about the lead in DC tap water. Second, it incorrectly reported (PDF file) that drinking water goals were being met. Both of these lapses occurred because of a reliance upon seriously underreported and quite possibly faulty compliance data.

Data quality continues to improve, but c’mon now. Safeguard our health.
