“Many small companies simply don’t want to get bigger,” Marshall said. “We did a case study on one company in which the owner had a chance to buy out a competitor and decided against it. He told me, ‘I’d rather pack my kids’ lunch and walk them to school.’ He just felt his life was a lot better if he stayed small.”
